ยุคสงครามกับโปเลียนจนถึงยุคระบอบประชาธิปไตยคู่

                              

                          จักรพรรดิฟรานซิสที่ 2 แห่งจักรวรรดิโรมัน ต่อต้านการปฏิวัติฝรั่งเศส เกิดสงครามนโปเลียน ผลการะทบคือการล่มสลายของจักรวรรดิโรมัน ภายหลังการประชุมที่เวียนนา ฝรั่งเศสได้คืนอาณาเขตกลับคืนและกำหนดชายแดนอย่างชัดเจน แต่ออสเตรียเริ่มอ่อนแอ จากการทำสงครามกับปรัสเซีย จักรพรรดิฟรานซิสโจเซฟที่ 1 ได้ยุบจักรวรรดิออสเตรียและเบลี่ยนมาใช้ระบอบประชาธิปไตยคู่ โดยตั้งจักรวรรดิออสเตรีย – ฮังการี เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1867

ค.ศ. 1955 เข้าสู่ยุคสงครามเย็นระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกากับสหภาพโซเวียต ออสเตรียไม่ได้เข้าร่วม แต่เป็นกลาง ตามเงื่อนไขการลาออกจากตำแหน่งการปกครองของราชวงศ์ฮับส์บูร์ก ออสเตรียจึงกลายเป็น สาธารณรัฐออสเตรียอีกครั้งและเข้าร่วมองค์การสหประชาชาติเมื่อเดือนธันวาคม ค.ศ. 1955 ปี ค.ศ. 1966 พรรคสังคมนิยมออสเตรีย ควบคุม ดูแลเศรษฐกิจและขับไล่นาซี จึงส่งผลให้ออสเตรีย ซึ่งเคยเป็นประเทศที่พ่ายแพ้สงครามโลกถึง 2 ครั้ง เปลี่ยนรูปแบบการปกครอง ในปัจจุบัน วันที่ 26 ตุลาคมของทุกปี เป็นวันชาติของออสเตรีย

ระบบการเมืองและระบบสังคมของออสเตรีย

                ออสเตรียปกครองด้วยระบบประชาธิปไตยที่มีรัฐธรรมนูญ หลังจากแพ้สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ก็เริ่มสั่งคลอน เนื่องจากเยอรมันหนีเข้ามาแทรกแซง ต่อมาเยอรมันพ่ายแพ้สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ออสเตรียประกาศตัวเป็นกลาง ไม่อยู่ภายใต้เงาของสหภาพโซเวียต ทั้งยังกลับมาเป็นประเทศสาธารณรัฐ อำนาจภายในแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ส่วน คือ ตุลาการ นิติบัญญัติและบริหาร ร่างรัฐธรรมนูญเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1920 ภายใต้การนำของนายกรัฐมนตรี ส่วนประธานาธิบดีเลือกตั้งโดยตรงจากประชาชน ดำรงตำแหน่งวาระละ 6 ปี นายกรัฐมนตรีจากหัวหน้าพรรค ได้รับเลือกตั้งด้วยคะแนนเสียงข้างมาก ทำหน้าที่บริหารประเทศ ส่วนรัฐสภา จะประกอบไปด้วยสภาล่าง มีสมาชิก 183 คน ได้รับเลือกตั้งจากประชาชนทุกๆ 4 ปี

สภาล่างจะควบคุมนักการเมือง รับผิดชอบสถาบันนิติบัญญัติในการร่างกฎหมายใหม่ ส่วนสภาสูง มีสมาชิก 62 คน เลือกตั้งจากสภาจังหวัด จะพิจารณากฎหมายอีกครั้ง

                ออสเตรียมีสถานะเป็นประเทศสหพันธรัฐ แต่ละรัฐจะมีสภาและผู้ว่าการรัฐ แต่การตัดสินใจต้องผ่านการเห็นชอบจากรัฐบาลและรัฐสภาก่อน พรรคการเมืองสำคัญได้แก่ พรรคสังคมประชาธิปไตย พรรคประชาชนออสเตรีย พรรคเสรีภาพแห่งออสเตรีย
